This form follows the classic needs-analysis model used in English for Specific Purposes, applied here to IELTS. It looks at three things: the target situation (what the university, body or visa requires), the present situation (where you are today) and your learning needs (how, when and with what motivation you learn).

It combines objective information, such as the band required, with subjective information, such as your preferences and anxiety (Brindley, 1989). Self-assessment uses the Common European Framework levels and is cross-checked against an objective diagnostic and a writing sample, since no single source is enough (Long, 2005; Serafini et al., 2015).

The CEFR-to-IELTS band mapping in the report is approximate and is confirmed by your teacher in the first lesson.
